Valkyrie

The Valkyrie are the heroes of the northern kingdoms, counterparts to the Myrmidons of the south and the Knighthood of the Faith. It is a title awarded by the state (usually a king or high noble) to individuals who prove themselves to be distinguished servants and defenders of the realm. Legendary soldiers and generals, saviors of the common folk, and devoted royal guardians can all be found among the ranks of the Valkyrie. Males who earn this title are called valkyr and addressed as “Val,” while females are called valkyra and addressed as “Vala.”

Since the title of valkyr or valkyra is given by the state and usually accompanied by a land grant, nomination for the Valkyrie is almost entirely political in nature. Kings, queens and lords alike often nominate loyal followers or those sworn to their houses as a means of extending their influence and popularity. The Valkyrie is also expected to reflect the highest standards of Northern virtues. As a result, valkyr and valkyra are often great warriors, noteworthy sorcerers, and men and women of unparalleled honor.
