Gustav’s life and the lives of the people of Pineford were comfortable until two weeks ago, when entire flocks of goats withered and died without cause, swarms of hornets viciously plagued the marketplace out of season, and a number of citizens (including his wife Jan and six-year-old daughter Gwen) were killed by unrelated and unprompted illnesses. Struck by grief and anger, Gustav latched onto the whispers of witchcraft, and led a march to Wintervale to demand that the king rectify the supernatural assault on his home. His journey gathered a cohort of like-minded followers, some seeking justice for their own misfortunes, some marching out of sympathy for the afflicted, and some just hungry for the blood of witches. He now has a crowd of close to two hundred disgruntled citizens at his back, and has camped outside of the Hall of Kings to voice his complaints.
